Alcoholism

Alcoholism, why drink? I mean, why is there a need for people to drink and drink until they either throw up multiple times or end up in hospital. They often end up there again later on or, maybe even worse, not make it at all. Also, alcoholism may lead to violence against family members with at times tragic consequences. Shouldn't alcohol be there to be enjoyed and not used to destroy oneself or the life of others?
